In a world that constantly moves and continues to grow, people often forget to slow down and appreciate the little things. Between busy schedules, piling homework, time-consuming extracurriculars, and more, genuine compassion in between the noise of it all can feel rare. However, Mr. Michael Clayman never failed to fill his classroom with kindness every single day. With every lesson, conversation, or interaction with students, Clayman ensured every person felt seen and like they mattered. As retirement begins for Clayman, Sierra Vista High School celebrates a man who leads with kindness and teaches from the heart.
Along with his kindness, Clayman showed his passion for teaching history during the 13 years he taught at Sierra Vista High School. Beyond that, Clayman worked as a teacher for 20 years, shaping young minds since 2006. Clayman shares, “I enjoy seeing students engaged, learning, and sharing their thoughts. I care about their success, and I am passionate about the subjects I teach. I enjoy teaching history, and I am a firm believer that knowing the past is key to understanding the present, and understanding the present will definitely enhance your future! Additionally, Clayman never misses the opportunity to see Vista’s talent. Clayman adds, “I have enjoyed watching our talented students perform at assemblies and during drama productions.”
Like everyone else, Clayman faced his fair share of challenges during his career. Clayman asserts, “I survived teaching 7th graders for 9 years. I have had some insanely overcrowded classrooms and my share of disrespectful students. ” However, Clayman never let that impact his drive to continue doing what he loves. Clayman adds, “The satisfaction from helping students makes this job worthwhile. To be a successful teacher, I give you the words of my mentor teacher: “never give up on yourself, and never give up on your students.”

To overcome his challenges, Clayman’s family never failed to back him up and support him when he needed it. Clayman remarks, “I have many educators in my family, including my wife, my Mom, my Godmother, and my sister.” These people not only supported Clayman during any obstacle he faced, but also inspired him to pursue his career in teaching.
As the school year comes to an end, Mr. Clayman looks forward to his retirement. Clayman shares, “I retire with a lot of happy memories. I am ready for a new chapter in my life. I look forward to having the freedom to schedule my day.”
Throughout his career, Clayman deeply impacted many students with his lessons and his warmth. Sameera Ahmed ( 12 ), one of Clayman’s students, looks back on her experience with him. Ahmed gratefully recounts, “I loved being in Mr. Clayman’s class and having him as one of my senior year teachers! He taught me so much and made me feel so welcome in his classroom. As a Muslim student, it made me so happy to have a teacher who was so accepting and kind to me during the Islam unit. It truly made me feel like I belonged and that I was accepted for my religion. Mr. Clayman is just one of the sweetest and most genuine teachers I have had! I looked forward to talking and saying hi to him in each class… There are not that many teachers who are as kind and respectful as him. I now realize how big a blessing it is to have had a teacher like him. Mr. Clayman is amazing at his job and I hope he and his family have so much joy and contentment in his retirement.”
Although Clayman will soon enter retirement, countless students will remember the effect he made on their lives. While Sierra Vista High School will undoubtedly miss Clayman on campus, his impact on students and fellow staff members will not be forgotten.
Congratulations on your retirement, Mr. Clayman! Thank you for all that you have done.
