The Sierra Vista High School varsity softball team charges into the 2025-2026 season with confidence, determination, and a drive to compete. Under the leadership of head Coach Eugene Felise and assistant Coach Madison Devine, the team continues to strengthen its chemistry while pushing toward a playoff run.
Coach Gene built his love for coaching through years of dedication to the sport and his family’s connection to softball. Coach Gene explains, “I have always been a sports fan, and as my daughter got older, I had the opportunity to coach her softball team.” “I have been coaching softball at Vista for 15 years, and my daughter was on the varsity team for 4 years.” Coach Gene’s experience and passion continue to shape the program and create a competitive environment for players.
Coach Gene keeps practices competitive while also creating a positive atmosphere for athletes. Coach Gene expresses that, “The kids know I like to have fun but still compete.” That balance between discipline and enjoyment allows players to grow together while staying motivated throughout the season.
Assistant Coach Madison also brings years of experience and passion to the program. After spending her childhood around the game, Coach Madison decided to continue her softball career through coaching. Coach Madison shares, “I played my whole childhood and figured why not,” ultimately completing the display of her love for the sport.
This year’s team stands out because of its athleticism, communication, determination, and growing chemistry. Coach Madison described the roster as talented and hardworking, especially with the addition of several skilled new players. Coach Madison voiced, “Personalities and friendships have become more tight-knit, but there are some egos that need to exercise humility.” Both coaches continue to encourage teamwork and accountability as the season progresses.
The coaching staff sets clear expectations for the team. Coach Gene stated, “The key goals we set as a team is to be respectful and accountable.” Coach Madison echoed a similar message, emphasizing unity over individual success, “When we work as a team, we win as a team…getting the girls to value team effort and achievement above individual success matters most.”
Like any season, Vista’s softball team already faced many obstacles. Coach Madison mentioned challenges involving academics and balancing school, sports, and social life. Despite those struggles, players continued to support each other and stay focused on improvement. Coach Gene praised the team’s response and highlighted the resilience the players showed during difficult situations.
The coaches constantly encourage players both on and off the field. “We motivate the team by trying to have a positive attitude and feed off of positive energy,” Coach Gene explains. Coach Madison also encourages players to stay true to themselves while checking in on teammates and supporting one another throughout the season.
Beyond softball, both coaches hope athletes carry important lessons into everyday life. Coach Gene emphasizes, “A life lesson to share with my players is to be a good teammate.” Coach Madison adds, “Lessons can be learned anywhere in life.” Through softball, athletes develop leadership, confidence, discipline, and accountability that extend far beyond the field.
One of the team’s proudest moments came during a recent matchup against Spring Valley High School. Even while facing a deficit, the players continued to fight until the final inning. Coach Madison reflects, “They didn’t give up and gave their best effort despite the other team having a lead.” The game reflected the determination and heart that define the team this season.
The coaching staff also focuses heavily on individual development. Coach Gene values players who show a strong work ethic, positive attitudes, and dedication to learning the game. Coach Madison looks for athletes who stay humble, encourage teammates, and maintain confidence after mistakes. Together, the coaches push athletes to improve their skills while contributing to the success of the team as a whole.
The softball program continues to strengthen school spirit throughout Sierra Vista. Players create camaraderie in academics and athletics while representing the school with pride. Coach Madison notes that softball also allows female athletes to shine and earn recognition for their hard work and achievements.
As the season continues, the team keeps its sights set on the playoffs. Coach Gene strongly points out, “The expectation for the season remains to make it to the playoffs and everything else is a bonus.” With playoff competition approaching, the coaching staff expects players to continue showing effort, intensity, and determination every inning of every game.
Through teamwork, resilience, and leadership, the Sierra Vista varsity softball team continues to build a season worth remembering.
