Every Thursday in the Theater (room 405), students gather from 1:30 to 2:30 PM to explore collaborative improvisational games and create comedic scenes. At Sierra Vista High School, the Drama Club provides a vibrant space for creative expression and personal growth. This allows students to express themselves in a positive environment through improv performances, welcoming students from all experience levels, fostering connections, and boosting confidence through improvisation. Additionally, improvisational acting reduces anxiety by serving as a form of exposure therapy, improving students’ tolerance towards stage fright and confidence in themselves.
Continuing her thirteenth year of advising the Drama club, Ms. Whittenberger strives to create a welcoming environment for students interested in the art of improv. Whittenberger shares, “I enjoy the collaboration between students already enrolled in the Theatre Program and the new students who are not enrolled, who attend meetings and practices every week. I enjoy the energy and creativity that the students bring into each week’s activities.”
Holding a deep passion for theatre and performing, Drama Club’s Publicist, Piper Watson (10), continues to pursue her passion for being on stage while also working behind the scenes. Watson shares when upcoming events take place through the Drama Club’s social media accounts, ensuring that all students interested in the club remain informed on where and when meetings will take place. Watson shares, “Events students looked forward to is Drama Club’s winter comedy night on December 4th.” Watson notes, highlighting the club’s dynamic calendar.
On December 4th, Sierra Vista Drama Club held a Winter Comedy night where Drama Club members performed for an audience involving 45 minutes of improvisational comedic scenes and four broad scenes. Jaxson Peterson (11) expresses his fellow actors’ remarkable performances, “Milk in the microwave performance, the actors are really talented, I enjoy the script. I saw how dedicated those actors worked, pulling through and creating an extraordinary performance.” Behind closed curtains, the backstage had a welcoming home-like atmosphere. Peterson expresses the liveliness while creating memories that will last a lifetime for the crew.
Blaise Bosewell, Vice President of UNLV improv, mentors drama club members, preparing them for future success. “These actors are leaving a memorable mark on the theater community,” Bosewell emphasizes.
Looking ahead, the Drama Club schedule includes the Theatre Program presenting the musical Hairspray on February 26-28th, hosting Improv League Competition in the spring, a Talent show in April, and an End of the Year Showcase. These events highlight students’ talents and showcase their dedication and hard work.
