On November 4, 2025, Democrats swept east coast elections including the mayoral race in New York City and both of the gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey. The elections brought hope to Democrats across the nation that reported feeling trapped in the economy and political climate of the current administration.
According to New York City’s Board of Elections, the mayoral contest resulted in the largest voter turnout in more than 50 years, with more than 2 million votes. The election featured the 34-year-old, self-proclaimed “Democratic Socialist” Zohran Mamdani, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani’s campaign focused on affordability, free child care, free city bus service, city-run grocery stores and a new Department of Community Safety with emphasis on mental health crisis response.
Despite criticism calling his campaign unrealistic, Mamdani, alongside Governor Kathy Hochul, kept true to one of his campaign promises, just 8 days after taking office, with the unveiling of “2-Care,” a new universal child care program for two-year-olds in New York City. With this victory, Mamdani made history as New York City’s first Muslim mayor, first mayor of South Asian heritage, first mayor born in Africa, and as the youngest mayor in more than a century.
In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger became the first female Governor, 527,271 votes ahead of Republican Winsome Earle-Sears. Spanberger’s victory flipped partisan control of the governor’s office, beginning a new, blue era for Virginia.
In New Jersey, Democrat and 53-year-old Navy veteran Mikie Sherrill became the second ever female Governor, defeating President Trump’s endorsement, Republican Jack Ciattarelli with 56.9% of New Jersey votes. Sherrill’s campaign focused on pushing back against Trump and the current administration’s funding freezes.
Ultimately, the November 2025 elections marked a turning point for Democrats as constituents in New York City, New Jersey, and Virginia voted blue, supporting candidates that continue to act against the Trump administration and in favor of affordability and opportunity for all.
