On Wednesday, April 8th, Sierra Vista High School (SVHS) hosted its annual Multicultural Fair, located in the main quad. Bringing together students, families, and friends for a lively evening filled with culture, entertainment, and celebration.
The quad transformed into a welcoming gathering space, filled with food vendors, club-run booths representing and promoting a variety of clubs offered at SVHS. From the Filipino Club to the Science Club, students collaborated for weeks, preparing for the event, coordinating not only booths but performances as well.
Respecting years of tradition, Sierra Vista’s Filipino Club performed“Tinikling,” a traditional Filipino folk stick dance, which features two or more fast-paced movements jumping between two moving bamboo sticks, and “Arnis,” which blends combat techniques with rhythmic movement. Club Advisor Pinky Escala explains the importance “..(there) more than just performances, they represent the heart and pride of the Filipino people.” A hit of the night, Polynesian Club representatives shared three different numbers, Hawaii, Tonga, Samoa, “represent(ing) the 3 different cultures most prevalent in our school community,” Club Advisor Penina Wiley (Coach P) emphasized. Through dance, their powerful performances educated the crowd and filled performers with cultural pride.
By the end of the night, the Multicultural Fair not only entertained, but it brought a whole community together. Through shared experiences and celebrations, the Sierra Vista community reminds us that diversity is not just to acknowledge but to celebrate.
