At Sierra Vista High School, academic excellence continues to grow through the success of the Advanced Placement (AP) Seminar course. In the 2024-2025 school year, 61 students reported their exam scores, earning an impressive 95 percent pass rate. These achievements can be attributed to both the dedication of the students and the support given by the school’s literary faculty, specifically Ms. Fick, who teaches all AP Seminar students. In modern society’s academic environment, academic competition is on the rise, making SVHS stand out by preparing students for advanced college content.
AP Seminar distinguishes itself from other English courses in that in addition to delving into the study of literary works, the program emphasizes the study of real-world issues from various perspectives and the creation of arguments that are evidence-based and not merely reliant on analyses of literary works. AP Seminar student, Yna Crizel Obiniana shared her experience by saying, “The course builds essential communication and analytical skills, which are necessary for college success.” Unlike schools across the nation, Clark County School District decided to offer an English 10 Honors/AP Seminar hybrid for incoming sophomores who received a minimum grade of “B” in English 9 honors or a MAPS score higher than 235. By providing AP Seminar as a core class, Sierra Vista ensures that academic opportunities remain accessible to more students while still maintaining high expectations for all students collectively.
As a current student taking and passing AP Seminar, I personally experienced the growth this course encourages. I especially appreciate that we can choose topics that genuinely interest us, which makes learning much more meaningful and engaging. Working in groups also strengthened my communication skills and confidence in public speaking, which can help anyone gain opportunities even outside of school. Sydney Ellis, another student taking AP Seminar, agrees by saying, “Working in groups where putting in all our effort has opened my eyes towards communication and brought a new experience I’ll forever reflect on.” These experiences indicate the collaborative and independent learning process expected in college. AP Seminar also serves as the first step toward earning the AP Capstone Diploma. After completing AP Seminar and AP Research, along with four additional qualifying AP classes with passing scores, students can earn the AP Capstone Diploma, which fulfills a typical freshman year of required classes; meaning AP Capstone graduates start college as sophomores. This recognition demonstrates advanced research skills and academic discipline, strengthening college applications and preparing students for college-level work.
The 95 percent pass rate among 61 students proves that Ms. Fick’s dynamic and rigorous teaching style works. More importantly, AP Seminar equips students with the skills and confidence to think independently, analyze complex issues, and communicate ideas clearly. Another AP Seminar student, Matteo Boado, recommends the course by commenting, “AP Seminar taught me important teamwork and time management skills that will help me in the long run.” As a student in the course, I can confidently say that while it holds many challenges, it also deeply rewards and truly prepares us for success beyond high school.
