On June 14 of 2025, PBS News shares, Vance Boelter broke into the home of Minnesota state representative, Melissa Hortman (D), killing her and her husband, Mark Hortman. Earlier that same day, Boetler shot Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman (D) and Yvette Hoffman both surviving the attack. Boelter also attempted to shoot their daughter, Hope Hoffman, but he fortunately missed. Police believed Boelter targeted Hortman due to her political views, specifically due to her pro-abortion views and Democratic party association. Despite sharing different political views, Lisa Demuth, the Republican house leader, shared Hortman was “respected by everyone at the Capitol.” While more commonly known as a political image to acquaintances, her close friends and community saw her as Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout Leader, gentle mother, successful lawyer, a loving wife, and CNN states she “was a bright shining light of a human being”.
After the assassination, the police discovered a ¨Hit List¨ in Boelter’s car. The list included names of his victims he planned to murder in the future, including abortion providers, pro-abortion rights advocates, and lawmakers in Minnesota and other states. While there is no set date for his trial yet, Boelter potentially could face the death penalty for his charges. The result of Boelter’s evil actions led him to six federal grand jury indictments.
