On the 12th of June 2025, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary, Kristi Noem held a press conference where law enforcement officers forcibly removed Senator Alex Padilla, California’s first Latino Senator.
Video footage of the removal shows Padilla entering the conference room and attempting to approach the podium to question Noem about immigration policy. Law enforcement ordered Padilla to the ground and placed him in handcuffs. Shared by CNN, Padilla identified himself while officers physically escorted from the room saying, “I am Senator Alex Padilla, I have questions for the secretary.” The incident, combined with a widespread outrage over President Donald Trump’s federal immigration raids, ignited multiple protest outbreaks, fueled public confrontations, and sharply intensified tension throughout neighborhoods across Los Angeles.
Shared by a CNN report, Padilla states, “I was there peacefully” he further explained; “if this is how the administration responds to a senator with a question, if this is how the department of Homeland security responds to a senator with a question, you can only imagine what they’re doing to farm workers, to cooks, to day laborers in the Los Angeles community and throughout California and throughout the country.” Padilla stated that his removal insults Congress and civil rights, emphasizing the need for peaceful protests.
Secretary Neom responded to the incident, sharing that US Secret Service,“..thought he was an attacker and officers acted appropriately. I wish that he would have reached out and identified himself…” Following the removal, authorities released Senator Padilla without pressing charges.
