On May 28, 2025, Elon Musk, who received special government employee status to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) which specializes in reducing regulations and streamlining federal operations, announced that his time in the Trump administration has come “to an end.” Musk’s disagreements with Donald Trump’s spending plans significantly influenced this decision, with the exception of his expiration after his 130-day term as a special government employee.
Billionaire Elon Musk vocalized in a post on X, a media platform owned by Musk, “as my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” also stating, “the @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.” With Musk’s time coming to an end in this program, CNN reported that DOGE is assured to continue its work, even with Musk stepping back from the government initiative.
Under Elon Musk’s leadership over the first four months in the Trump administration, as stated by CNN, DOGE completely overturned the federal government, causing major chaos and drastic change. At least 121,000 federal workers were furloughed or targeted for layoffs in Trump’s first 100 days, with thousands more taking buyout offers. Musk stated in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning , “I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing… I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both.” Trump ignored Musk’s comments that the bill did not get enough cuts. The “Big, Beautiful Bill” includes trillions of dollars in tax cuts and a major increase in U.S. military and national security spending to fund the plan, with federal health and nutrition programs overhauled and energy programs cut to cover the costs. This bill would approximately add another $3.8 trillion to the deficit. The Trump administration gave limited information to the public about the size of DOGE and its future after Musk departed.
