On January 20, 2025, Donald J. Trump took office as the 47th President of the United States, marking his second term after winning a nonconsecutive reelection. The ceremony took place inside the Capitol Rotunda in Washington D.C. after cold temperatures and unsafe winds encouraged the officials to move the event indoors for everyone’s safety. The indoor ceremony deviates from the traditional ceremony at the Capitol’s West Front.
Chief Justice John G. Roberts administered the presidential oath as Trump while his wife Melania Trump stood beside him. The Vice President J.D Vance also took the oath of office during the ceremony, officially starting his first term in the role. Former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris also attended, keeping the democratic tradition of a peaceful transfer of power between prior and current administrations.
Trump’s return to the presidency came after a closely watched, hard-fought election and a campaign season that deeply divided the country. Trump’s victory serves historical significance, as he became the second United States President to serve nonconsecutive terms. In his inaugural address, Trump emphasized on goals of national strength and unity while using examples from the previous administration he did not necessarily agree with. Trump outlined plans to pursue changes in the country’s immigration enforcement, economic policies, and approaches to foreign affairs.
The ceremony included several customary elements, like musical performances and the presence of lawmakers, former presidents, and many other invited guests. Extra security got placed around the Capitol because of the amount of political tension across the country. Even with these divisions, the inauguration officially began a new presidential term and showed that the Constitution still guides the way power passes along in the United States.
