On every first and third Thursday of the month from 1:15 PM to 1:45 PM, the Sierra Vista High School Asian Student Union (ASU) gathers to celebrate Asian culture and community. ASU’s goal is to bring all students together by encouraging them to participate in the club’s activities and events. ASU started at SVHS this year under the advisement of Ms. Melissa Ferrer.
Ms Ferrer decided to advise ASU because she “Wanted to get involved with a club and loved how excited the students in ASU were.” Ms Ferrer is especially excited about seeing the future of this club, and she hopes “To bring our student body together, promote diversity, and learn about Asian cultures.”
Asian Student Union President Anna Yu (11) devotes herself to expanding ASU and promoting club involvement among students. Yu shares that she introduced the club on campus to create a community for Asian students to “hang out and have fun.” Yu focuses her presidency on bringing people together, and she elaborates, “Seeing the many Asian students that we have on campus and not really seeing any place for all of them to gather together prompted me to begin my club.” Yu finds immense joy in ASU, commenting, “Just seeing the interactions everyone has with each other when we begin. Also, seeing my plans being put into action. It’s really fun to be in the moment and immerse yourself in it.” Yu wants to give back to the community and hopes to expand the Asian Student Union by working to “collaborate with other clubs on campus.” Yu further explains, “It would be amazing to see many different clubs on campus working together to increase engagement.” Yu is extremely excited to continue working with this club and expanding it, and she hopes to participate in more volunteer opportunities outside of school and give back to the community.
Vice President of ASU Kent Vega (11) shares, “What I enjoy most about ASU is the sense of community we build and the welcoming space we create. What I think is best about our club is how easy it is to meet new people. I would like to share and say that anyone is welcome to ASU, and it gives you a voice; members can suggest activities and ideas for future events and meetings, really shaping the club and its culture.”
Going into the second semester, ASU excitedly prepares for the Multicultural fair, where they will host a game of cup pong with Boba Tea Drinks. Yu states, “We hope through the Multicultural Fair we’ll be able to get recognition and receive greater exposure.”
The Asian Student Union welcomes everyone interested in Asian culture, as Yu describes, “We’re open to new ideas, continuing the diversity, and welcoming anyone that wants to show up.”
