The Sierra Vista American Sign Language club was first established in 2016. Using ASL one can communicate with deaf people. This club provides a space for the deaf community and others interested in learning ASL. Learning ASL can help pupils to better understand friends, family, and their peers.

As the ASL club advisor, Ms. Marinel Schieff shares, ¨ASL Club is a place for students to learn and practice ASL within the school and community, improving their communication skills in this visual language. It provides a setting for students who share an interest in ASL and Deaf culture.¨ Joining ASL club can open many doors of opportunity for Sierra Vista students including a variety of different careers. Interpreting, child care, social work, counseling are just a few of the jobs that scholars can achieve.

Ms. Schieff hopes to promote student participation and raise awareness among the school. Being an informed member of the Sierra Vista community helps to create a diverse environment. Simply, taking two days a month to meet with this club can make a student’s life more fulfilling. As the ASL constitution states, “Members in good standing of the Language Club, who have participated at least 2 years, are eligible for a club graduation cord. One of the minimum two years must include the member’s senior year.¨

Anyone wishing to is able to join as long as they agree to follow the ASL club constitution. ASL club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month in room 830 after school. There is a due and fee of five dollars . The fee will include an activity packet and the due will include a club T-shirt.

When others can grow to better understand the deaf community, everyone can come together as one. ASL club is a space where students can make friends and enjoy learning. Joining ASL club can make a person appreciate their time in high school.
