How to Manage Time in a Block Schedule

Don’t Get Blocked by the Block!

Sierra Vista High School students all know the changes of this year’s schedule, consisting of eight classes and a block schedule. Getting work done can be hard for some students, or not knowing when they should get work done. When time is used right, issues with block schedule can fade away.

Block schedule should help students succeed in school by giving students the chance to focus on only four classes a day. Use the fact that all eight classes are not on the same day as an advantage. This gives students time to complete their work either in class, or at home for the four classes that day. Procrastination constantly takes place when it comes to work being given to students, which is not due for two days. This tends to hurt students because too much procrastinating can lead to a buildup of work. This is extremely common, because points do not get deducted for late work in the new grading policy.

Of course, some people make excuses as to why they do not get time after school to do homework. Many students do not have the option for free time after school, and it is totally understandable. Some students could possibly take part in their job or play a school sport. Luckily, students can use time at school: work days in class, at the end of class, at the beginning class, lunch, and even after school tutoring. Utilize every minute in order to complete what needs to be done. Doing so can help lower the stress from having too many things to do outside of school.

At brown.edu, presentation “Block Scheduling: Innovations with Time’’, a bundle of examples on why block scheduling is good for students. A lot of them relate to the relationships with students and teachers. There is now more time in class meaning more one-on-one time. If a student is having trouble with the work in class, they can talk to the teacher for help. This can build better connections between the teachers and the students. Students can also have more time to collaborate with other students; time with teachers and peers can help with better understanding subjects. Quality time is important for students to collaborate better and help them in the future.

Phones during class time are one of the biggest distractions in school. With block schedule, students have to sit in the same class for 1 hour and 20 minutes. That is a long time, and students get bored and tired sitting in a chair all day. Phones ensue distractions for a bored high school student. If there is work to do, find something motivating so it sounds like the greater option over using a phone.

The new schedule is definitely something that is fresh to many students, and even some teachers. Knowing how to manage time correctly can not only help students’ grades, but improve their futures.
