Clapping or stomping echoes throughout the school as Dynasty makes their way into the spotlight. Sierra Vista High School’s step and dance team Dynasty, has been around since 2011, and continues to get better and better every year under the guidance of adviser Ashley Mendez.

One of the captains, Kaitlyn Savella, is a senior here at SVHS and has been on the team for three years. “Dancing is something I definitely enjoy, and something I always go to no matter what.” stated Savella. “Dancing has changed me as a person and it has become a huge part of my life.” continued Savella. Because she is one of the captains, she has a lot of responsibilities and must strive to be a good leader for the remainder of the team. “As a captain, we’re all responsible for creating choreography for our events, leading the team, giving advice, and being a person the team can go to for anything.” said Savella.

Because the lockdown occurred, the team had to be put on pause until further notice. This change could have affected the Dynasty environment due to the fact that they were not able to see each other for so long. “We would practice over google meets, and it was a struggle to dance as a whole,” mentioned Savella.“With Covid, we went through a lot of obstacles but we scheduled park practices where we would record dance videos and put them on our social media” continued Savella.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still happening, Dynasty has taken certain protocols for all their dancers to remain healthy and safe. “We still socially distance ourselves and wear our masks while practicing. We also each have our own squares so we can dance in our space” said Savella.

Not only has their protocols changed, but their environment has as well. “Our dancing environment has definitely changed with the new protocols, but the positive and hard working environment is still there; the family-like environment still exists “stated Savella.

Now that we’re back in person for school, Dynasty has been able to practice with protocols for their safety. They perform at pep- rallies, some of the football games, and even during lunch. “We worked it out and were blessed to be able to be together again and have opportunities to perform as a family” expressed Savella.
