School is finally back in session and the Sierra Vista High School Theater students are ready to put on one of their best shows yet. The actors are working incredibly hard to produce a play in time for the Nov. 5 and 6 at 6 p.m. showtimes.

Theater students have practiced for hours to make sure everything is perfect. Effort plays a huge part in production and these students have definitely made it known that they want to entertain the audience to the best of their abilities. The play will be held in the SVHS Theater, which is located right in front of the front entrance doors.

We are aware that COVID-19 is a huge concern and the theater teacher and students have made it very important that all actors wear their mask while performing and practicing. The SVHS theater director and teacher, Mrs. Whittenberger, does an outstanding job with keeping track of contract tracing. These protocols are crucial to the students and teachers health, everyone is doing an amazing job working with the updated conditions.

This year they will perform The Diary of Anne Frank. This story has touched many individuals around the world. The cast of SVHS is so excited for you to see it being presented to you by our very own cast. Hard working actors and actresses have been preparing for this moment since spring of 2020. Students that will be playing the main roles in this play have had to audition to earn their spot. The main character in the play is Anne Frank and will be played by Laura Nieland. When asked how she prepares for her big moment on stage “Before I go out on stage, I prepare myself by calming any potential nerves I have by getting into character and making sure I know everything that I’m supposed to do before I exit the wings.”

There will be nine other actors and in this play, each individual is extremely excited.

Laura Nieland (center) prepares to assume the role of Anne Frank.

Although there are only ten actors that the audience will see on stage. There is an extreme amount of work that goes on behind the stage. Approximately 15 students that we don’t see on stage helped make this show possible. There are individuals that will be making the set which is very important. Our theater teacher emphasized that the set took a lot of time, financial investment, and an extreme amount of effort from the students.

Students enrolled in theater have the opportunity to help with the set, be a character, etc. This class is perfect for those who are hardworking.

Students prepare for the big show

The “Diary of Anne Frank” is a timeless play set in one of the darkest times in world history. WWII and the persecution of followers of the Jewish faith.  Mrs. Whittenberger picked this play because she believes that the theme and meaning is still very relevant in this time in age. These students have said that they love this class, they feel very connected with each other. They do fun and engaging activities that build connections not only on stage but out of school.  She has told us that we should expect a “polished presentation by the end of the night.”
