In the cool and snowy mountains, Sierra Vista High School’s Ski Club provides students the perfect escape from the grueling Vegas heat, allowing students to glide down slopes and après-ski with one another, carving out unforgettable memories that can weather any blizzard. Debuting this year, the Ski Club earned its spot as one of the many interesting extracurriculars offered at Sierra Vista High School and remains the only Ski Club in CCSD.
Advising Ski Club this season, Mr. Jeremy Fisher serves as a guide through the mountain’s snowy slopes, paying it forward since Fisher served as President of his own ski club for two years during high school. Fisher asserts “Currently, we are the only Ski Club in CCSD, so that in itself is a pretty big accomplishment. We had about a dozen students learn to ski or snowboard for the first time and we sold out our first trip. It would be great to get other schools involved and get a trip to Colorado going.I can almost guarantee that any student who attends a Ski Club trip that it is one of the best experiences they will have in High School. Don’t take my word for it though, ask those who went, and come along on the next one.”
At the foundation of Ski Club, an inspiring group of board members, each committed to fostering a love for skiing among students. Passionate about his craft, Joseph Kelly (11), President of Ski Club, devotes himself to sharing the sport of skiing with other students, leading members towards unforgettable adventures. “I love seeing people try skiing or snowboarding for the first time and fall in love with it… Ski Club is more than just skiing or snowboarding,” shares Kelly, “it’s about hanging out with friends, trying something new, and having the best time in the mountains.”
As Ski Club hits the slopes this season, Vice President Lola Shanahan (10) embodies the spirit of skiing and camaraderie in perfect sync with her fellow club members, fostering collaboration and unity amongst members. Shanahan attests “Ski Club gives me the opportunity to achieve success on a board and gain experience in a leadership role that will help me with future jobs or careers. I would say students should join Ski Club because it is a way to connect with peers about a sport that is not usually offered in the school environment”
As Ski Club hits the slopes this season, Secretary Jacy Johnson (11) seamlessly navigates the trails and the club’s activities, ensuring that the club’s momentum never falters. “I enjoy being the secretary of Ski Club because it is a great program and all of the people in it are extremely nice and fun to be around. Students should join Ski Club because it is filled with people who create a positive, uplifting environment and skiing is awesome!!”
In a world where high school can leave students feeling overwhelmed, Sierra Vista High School’s Ski Club serves as the perfect way to ski away all stresses. With each descent, students not only hone their skiing skills, but also create lasting memories with friends, making Ski Club the perfect extra curricular for building an unforgettable high school experience. Students are encouraged to join Ski Club next season in the winter, where meetings will be held in Room 317 every other Tuesday.
