A Minecraft movie “ender pearled” into theatres on Friday, April 4th, 2025, and exploded in popularity. A Rotten Tomatoes score of 48% and an audience score of 88%, reveals a stark contrast between the serious reviewers, and the casual movie watchers. With a run time of 1 hour and 41 minutes, and a talented cast led by Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Emma Myers. The sub-two hour Minecraft movie manages to pack all the hilarious Minecraft references it can into the film. The film had a budget of 150 million dollars, and has already passed that in box office earnings, reaching 323 million dollars worldwide, making it the biggest opening weekend of 2025 so far.
Initially, when “A Minecraft Movie” trailers “water bucket released,” the film received negative response from longtime fans of the game, with many fans making fun of the movie; however, those same jokes slowly built the excitement for the release of the movie. Incredibly excited for this movie, many moviegoers experienced a crowd buzzing with excitement, and so much yelling and screaming that some theatres paused so that movie theater staff could tell the crowd to calm down, the crowds were incredibly rowdy, throwing food and drink all over the place in a fit of excitement and joy for the movie they waited so long to see.
“A Minecraft Movie” follows Steve, played by Jack Black, Garret, played by Jason Momoa, Natalie, played by Emma Myers, Henry, Played by Sebastian Hansen, and Dawn, played by Danielle Brooks. The movie begins with Garret purchasing a portal
opening cube from a storage auction, once they go through the portal, Steve begins leading the gang around the world of minecraft, introducing them to the way his world works, and showing them how he makes his “Lava Chicken”. During Steve’s tour of his world, a short but sweet tribute to the late Alexander “Technoblade” , appreciated by many fans. “A Minecraft Movie” truly was a nostalgic experience with all the meme references and tributes packed into the film, but it was still able to be thoroughly enjoyed by those who hadn’t ever played the games. “A Minecraft Movie” truly was a spectacle for all ages. Many of which enjoyed it thoroughly, proved by their buzzing excitement throughout the course of the movie’s run time.
Overall, “A Minecraft Movie” was an amazing experience for those who saw it, giving Minecrafts older fanbase a hit of nostalgia every few minutes, and giving its younger fans a movie to remember. “A Minecraft Movie” was an easter egg packed film, with over 75 different tributes to memes, people and Minecraft in general. The cast did an amazing job playing their roles and the director truly cared about the original content, the amount of love and care that was put into this movie displayed throughout the entire film. Because of this, the talent of the writers and actors, and the references throughout, “A Minecraft Movie” earns itself a 8.5/10
