Sierra Vista’s 2024-2025 Cheer team closed out an incredible season clinching first place in both regionals and state competitions in the Crown Leader division — then earning an impressive fourth place during Nationals in Anaheim, California. Head Coach Jackie Dulay proudly shared, “Considering this was the first time Vista has been to USA Nationals with a Game Day routine, we learned just how capable we are when we stay dedicated and disciplined, even when things feel overwhelming.” As the cheer team continues to take on greater challenges, their success not only showcases their talent but sets the stage for upcoming cheerleaders next year.
Throughout the season, the team faced many flips and falls, both on and off the mat. Coach Dulay explained, “As coaches, one of the biggest challenges we faced this season was ensuring that every athlete fully committed to the process.” Varsity Cheerleader, Morgan Kirby (11) opened up about her own struggles, sharing, “The biggest challenge I personally faced during competition season was trying to prove myself that I was good enough to stand on the mat… and meeting certain goals and expectations.” Kirby’s reflection reveals the struggles and dedication cheerleaders put in behind the scenes, even having the team’s support. However, pushing each other to overcome obstacles helps the team grow more comfortable and bond within the team.
Despite the pressure, the bond between the cheer team carried them throughout their toughest moments. Varsity Cheerleader and Student Council member, Gavin Simpson (10) expressed how staying motivated got him through the season and how he felt moments where “There were days where I just wanted to go home and times where I felt super discouraged.” Moreover, his experience revealed how even the most dedicated athletes face challenges and
having a great mentality helped finish off the season strong. Each year Sierra Vista’s cheer team thrive in competitions while also showing school spirit during football and basketball seasons, as well as performing during assemblies. Simpson expresses, “Being a part of the cheer team means
embodying the school spirit and just having fun in general.” Balancing Student Council responsibilities with cheer commitments requires dedication, but supporting the school and teammates remains a top priority for these athletes.
Behind every flip, every stunt and high energy competitions includes the hard work and bonds formed to get to that point. While more bonds built throughout the countless hours of practice are just as important as the perfect skills shown on the mat. Coach Dulay shares a meaningful lesson, “[I] hope every athlete takes away from this season that discipline is the key to success. Talent alone isn’t enough—you have to work hard, stay consistent, and be disciplined to truly stand out and reach your goals.” As the season comes to an end, Sierra Vista’s cheerleaders leave with stronger skills but also with friends who become family. Moments like these continue to build the foundation for upcoming cheerleaders, pushing themselves to achieve new future opportunities.
Future cheerleaders who plan to step on the mat and become a part of the Sierra Vista cheer family tryouts next season take place March 24th to March 27th 2025 in the school cafeteria.
