Sierra Vista High School’s Polynesian Club fosters a sense of “ohana,” culture, and positivity that encourages students to come together to celebrate as they learn about Polynesian culture.
Driven by the aspiration to spread and educate others on the beauty of Polynesian culture, CSM Coach Penina Wiley and CSM Joeseta Fatuesi proudly advise Polynesian Club. Joeseta shares, “I was President of the Poly Club when I was in high school. It allowed me to bond with my Polynesian schoolmates and learn more about the culture. I love the kids here, they remind me of when I was a kid learning about my culture too when I was their age. The kids make it fun, they make it worth it. Polynesian Club is the one club on campus that has multiple cultures that you can learn the similarities and differences between them.”
One of the most exciting and beautiful aspects of Polynesian culture remains cultural dances. Sierra Vista High School’s Polynesian Club does not just value learning about the history and tradition of the islands, but it also encourages students to live them especially through dance. Polynesian Club’s dance choreographer, Calaya Saunders (11), expresses, “I enjoy being a dance choreographer because I get to share my knowledge to individuals that are new to performing and see them grow throughout the year. Many of our students in Poly Club feel discouraged to dance because of the want to not be embarrassed. I get to break that awkward shell and support those students to be more confident in our precious dances.” Saunders adds, “Although the club is a safe place where people of Polynesian descent can hang out, it is also where those who would like to explore our customs and traditions are welcomed. Anyone from anywhere is encouraged to join our family.”
As the school year continues, Polynesian Club plans for more events for students to look forward to, including Multicultural Fair on April 8, Bake-Offs, and more performances during school events such as the Winter assembly and Pep-Rallies.
Whether students look to dance, eat, learn, or simply connect, the Polynesian Club offers a place for everyone to experience the connection and community Polynesian culture encourages. Polynesian Club unites students from different backgrounds, creating a space where respect, culture, and learning come together to build a community.
