In December of 2024, the collapse of Assad’s downfall in Syria indicated a moment in history, but it is also a moment that helps nations rethink their strategies. In the Middle East thousands of innocent Syrians lost their lives. President Joe Biden articulated it as a “moment of risk, but also a moment of historic opportunity,” stressing the immediate motivational need to assist Syria. Biden thought of it as a moment that helps nations reshape Syria, but it is also a better time of power. He was also warned about the dangers of groups, like the Islamic State of Iraq (ISIS), who is known for being a terrorist organization that was formed in the early 2000’s. This group’s plan was to gain control over territories in Iraq and Syria that might take advantage of the chaos after Assad’s fall, and stressed the need to act quicker during this moment.
Biden wished for opposition groups to show that they are able to respect people’s rights and work fairly together to create a better government. He also spoke on how “[Syrians] regime [were] brutalized, tortured, and killed hundreds of thousand innocent Syrians.” This also pointed out that Assad’s downfall was linked to his allies, such as Russia and Iran, that were also dealing with their own issues throughout Ukraine and Israel.
However, President-elect Donald Trump disagreed with Biden’s idea to further U.S involvement in Syria claiming, the U.S should stay out of Syria’s conflict. He says, “This is not our fight” and feels that the U.S should not worry about another country in the Middle East. This disagreement between Biden’s push for leadership and Trump’s stand on lack of involvement reveals the opposing views on U.S’s rule in global politics.
The fall of Assad’s regime is not just a change in leadership; but it is a moment that helps nations rethink their strategies in the Middle East. While Biden called for action and wanted to step up for the Syrian, the biggest challenge was balancing international stability with U.S
interest. Meanwhile, Syria might take advantage of the chaos after rethinking their strategies in Iraq and Syria. Nevertheless, this also presents a moment of historic opportunity, which raises the possibility of Assad’s fall and emphasizes the need for international accountability. This shows the need for countries to work together during this harsh crisis
