In June of 2024, climate scientist Claudia Sheinbaum defeated Xóchitl Gálvez and Jorge Máynez to make history by becoming not only Mexico’s first female president but also the first Jewish leader in the country’s 200 year history.
Sheinbaum’s drive to fight against President Donald Trump on his tariff proposals resonated with many Mexicans (considering that these tariffs could raise prices in the country). Sheinbaum’s unwillingness to follow Trump’s demands makes her admirable to many voters, as well as it is audible in her speech, “There is no subordination here”(Sheinbaum). President Sheinbaum proposed many policies such as her retaliatory tariff policy to combat Trump’s tariff threat
Sheinbaum continued to keep many of the key cabinet members from her predecessor, former President Lopez Obrador, in their positions. But also including new members and removing some previous members, this series of decisions causes Sheinbaum’s team to exhibit a more technical profile. Despite being a political figure, Sheinbaum (using her previous background knowledge as a climate scientist) decided to take a more climate focused approach, unlike her predecessor Lopez Obador. Sheinbaum makes her favor and backing of renewable energy obvious in her outward support for it in her speeches and rallies. Sheinbaum mentions her new renewable energy policies, such as her plan to implement more solar panels in northern Mexico in an attempt to help combat the climate crisis.
Claudia Sheinbaum election holds much promise for Mexico. In her relatively short time in office so far, Sheinbaum proposed changes and continued resilience has earned her favor with Mexicans as they see her as quite admirable. Sheinbaum has around five years left in her presidency, and with the time she has, many citizens anticipate Sheinbaum’s next decisions.
