Dreams of creating a fashion club at Sierra Vista High School became a reality. At the start of the 2024-2025 school year, fashionistas at Sierra Vista found a place to meet. With creativity flowing as freely as fabric on the runway, the Sierra Vista Fashion Club allows students to express themselves and find their personal style. Fashion club advisor, Ms. Balon committed to Fashion Club when some of her students approached and asked her to be the advisor. Ms. Balon shares, “The kids for Fashion Club just came and asked me if I had time to host them in my room. I was co-advising with Mr. Baltera, but he got busy, so I just took over the club completely.”
Fashion Club consists of, Ms. Balon firmly set as the full-time Advisor, President, Maliq Wyatt (12), Vice President, Matthew Chen (12), Secretary, Kalani Robles (12), Treasurer Kylie Khamsengmanivong (11), and Historian Madison Mejorada (12). The Executive Board plans to host a mini fashion show at the end of the year, as well as work with other clubs at SVHS. Maliq Wyatt shares, “My board and I are hoping to hold a mini end-of-year fashion show, as well as collaborating with more clubs around campus to build more connections and events to improve students’ experience.”
To bring students together, the club participates in fashion-based service projects and focuses on investigating and analyzing important fashion history and connecting them to modern-day trends. Recently, the club used recycled t-shirt fabric in order to create 30 dog toys and donated them to a local animal network.
Fashion Club offers students a chance to observe both student and popular culture fashion choices. President Maliq Wyatt adds, “My favorite part would definitely be being able to see all the different styles of our club members at meetings. It gives you a big outlook into their personality, upbringing, and what they stand for. Fashion is a universal and personal statement, and the whole purpose of our club is to bring people together through their love for it, no matter how they dress.”
Any student interested in joining the club can attend the club’s meetings every other Tuesday after school in room 204. For additional information, visit the club’s Instagram account, @sierravistafashionclub.
