On November 18, 2024, Sierra Vista High School’s Multimedia Communications CTE program hosted the Vista Royale, a video game (Esports) competition, taking place in Vista’s library, starring the popular video game, Fortnite, from 1:15pm to 6:00pm. The “Vista Royale” featured multiple duos competing against each other on Fortnite in hopes to win the Lion’s Cup, two trophies filled with prizes awarded to the last pair standing.
Welcoming players into the library, the Multimedia team rolled out the red carpet at the entrance for player interviews, followed by pre-game mingling and a late lunch. At 3pm the battle began with duos going head to head to get as many kills on Fortnite as they could before the timer ran out for each round. Throughout the evening, the library buzzed with activities such as streaming, eating, and intense gaming, and after three hours of playing Fortnite, the “Vista Royale” concluded with the winning duo, Michael Gaulden (9) and Michael Abbott (9) receiving their trophies.
Amazed at the level of enthusiasm leading up to the tournament, Multimedia Communications’ teacher, Ms. Lyn, expresses, “ I think the turnout was WAY better than my expectations. I didn’t anticipate such support and interest by our Multimedia students and so many spectators to attend.”
Working with numerous sponsors including Vegas Inferno, Valhallan Esports, 3rd Eye Productions, Discovered, HighLevel, The Firehouse Dream, and IMGCMP Technology, the Vista Royale collaborated with these companies for guidance in order to host the events taken place during the tournament. Sponsor Aj Tuere, 3rd Eye Productions, humorously noted that the tournament surpassed her expectations by stating, “Even after the kids got food, they stayed.” Providing the food and drinks, Raising Cane’s, Prime, Capriotti’s, and CrunCheese offered a late lunch for attendees.
Anyone interested in participating in any future events, Ms. Lyn adds, “We have a Video Games Club that throws tournaments all the time. I would prefer to support their tournaments and leave it up to my advanced [Multimedia II] classes to decide what type of live event to throw to complete our multimedia production standards each year.”
