From October 18th to October 19th, student council lock-in occurred when students transformed the school into their own sleepover. Each year, Sierra Vista High School’s Student Council organizes a lock-in that promises to be an unforgettable night where members can spend the night at school. Lock-in offered many activities for students across all grades to connect, build friendships, and make new memories.
Students met at the school at 3:30 pm and brought their own sleeping bag and air mattress as they expected to spend the night in the gym. The night began with students being divided into Junior Council (JC) groups. Each group was a mix of students from different grades. The goal of being separated into these groups was so students were able to bond, communicate, and enjoy the time together. The JC groups participated in a series of ice-breaker games and challenges promoting teamwork within the council. One of the activities in the JC groups was a fun game of “Mario Cart” and “Just Dance”. The game encouraged students to get to know each other on a deeper level while working towards winning the game.
After the JC group, each class participated in their unique bonding activities, with the junior’s activity being a “candy salad”. This activity involved students sharing their student council “traumatic experiences” including lighthearted moments of embarrassment or funny mistakes they encountered while in council. Each student brought a bag of candy and poured it into a large bowl, sharing their different experiences. Students passed around and it eventually became a mix of candies they called, “candy salad”.
At 5:15 pm, to bring all grades back together, the student council catered Cafe Rio. At 6:00 pm, when dinner ended, students were treated to a special showing of the school’s Halloween play, “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” The play was a perfect way for students to support other council members who were starring in it, and watching the play together provided a moment for students to bond.
After the play students played a fun murder mystery game called, “Dónde Está Christian?”. Students became detectives, tasked with solving the mystery of Christian’s “disappearance” by piecing together clues hidden around the school. JC groups raced through hallways and classrooms, trying to find out who was behind the murder of Christian Rebolledo. Clues included posters giving hints where he might be and his items were scattered around the school that had a meaning behind them. Nehemiah Brown(12) and Irina Jecova(12) JC group won this game by being the fastest to find out where Christian was and who killed him.
Following the murder mystery game, students participated in the student council’s yearly lip sync battle. Each class competed against one another with students dressing up, =choreographing routines, and giving hilarious performances to some of the most popular songs of the year. Soon after, the student council played a massive game of hide and seek around the school. There was barely any light around and school students were sneaking around the halls, hiding in the foyer, or even under stairwells. Students were trying their best not to get caught by the seekers as they navigated the darkened school.
Once the council completed all the planned activities for the night, they were given some free time before bed. Girls were settled in the aux gym while boys slept in the main gym. Many students used this time to chat with new friends, while others gathered in small groups to play card games or share stories from the night. Students had to leave the next morning, October 19th by 6 am and parents picked them up. The Student Council’s Lock-In brought everyone closer together and many can’t wait for their upcoming Disney trip in December.
