As the bell rings, hungry students flood the halls, stairs, and quad. Even with the option of purchasing meals from Raising Canes or Buffalo Wild Wings, the school lunch line remains a constant, leading students out the cafeteria doors. When students returned to school in 2022 after the pandemic, Sierra Vista became one of the fortunate schools selected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision, enabling it to provide free lunch to every student. Every tray now features the necessary food groups: fruit, vegetables, protein, grains, and dairy. Beyond supplying essential nourishment for both body and mind, the cafeteria presents numerous opportunities to enrich students’ lives.
One of the highlighted programs involves drop carts placed in the cafeteria. Students can deposit unwanted food items in these carts for others to claim, as Ms. Owens explains, “Many kids experience hunger, and some may feel hesitant to speak up.” These carts offer students the chance to grab an extra snack while maintaining anonymity and avoiding embarrassment.
Another program aimed at supporting students involves working in cafeteria positions. This elective not only awards students academic credit but also furnishes valuable work experience and independence, offering a wage of $11.50 per hour, which can provide significant financial assistance to struggling students.
The final initiative implemented to assist students provides the opportunity to take complete lunches home. For some students, the food provided at school represents their sole source. Being able to bring food home can make a significant difference. After enrolling through their counselor, students receive additional lunches to take home.
Despite the thousands of students at Sierra Vista High School, the cafeteria staff manages to care for each individual who walks through its doors. Ms. Owens elaborates on their approach: “We operate as a family, supporting each other.” Teachers and staff members from various departments lend their assistance whenever required, contributing to the betterment of the students’ lives at Sierra Vista High School.
