On November 18th, 2023, Las Vegas hosted its first Formula One in its two year contract. Formula 1, more commonly known as F1, is the highest class of international racing for open-wheel single-seater formula racing. In spring of 2023, F1 announced that the City of Las Vegas signed a 10-year contract with F1 to host the grand race till 2032. The Las Vegas Grand Prix Circuit featured iconic landmarks such as the Venetian, Caesars Palace, the Bellagio, and the Sphere.
Many criticized F1 for its steep prices, and called it a flop before the race even commenced due to the many tickets and hotel packages that remained unsold (Sports Illustrated). Perhaps the most notable critic of Las Vegas’s first year of F1 was 3-time World Driver Champion Max Verstappen, who called the event “99% show, 1% sporting event.” due to the city being a well known entertainment hub for tourists.
Locals also complained about the race because of high traffic volume due to construction and the altering of iconic features on the strip. 24-hour convenience store owner, Wade Bohn, says “We didn’t need the F1. If they make that bridge permanent, I’m done, because there’s no traffic,”.
Due to safety precautions, MGM Resorts removed the palm trees prior to the race. Additionally, the Bellagio fountains were temporarily shut off to make room for grandstands.
Despite the Grand Prix’s rocky start, it turned out to be a great success. Las Vegas’ glitz and glam won both tourists and racers over, resulting in record breaking profits for the city.
In the end, Verstappen came around saying, “I’m already excited to come back here next year and hopefully try to do something similar.” Verstappen went viral as he sang Viva Las Vegas as he raced down the circuit in celebration of his 18th win of the season.
