On December 12, 2023 Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, made his second appearance at the White House in Washington DC where he met with U.S. President, Joe Biden. According to CNN articles by Kevin Liptak, Arlette Saenz, MJ Lee, and the White House statements and releases, the reason for the prearranged meeting was to discuss the terms of Ukraine and Russia’s ongoing war. Furthermore, the two presidents discussed the United States commitment to assisting Ukraine amidst their raging war against Russia. As the war progresses and Russia moves in with more advanced missile and drone strikes, Zelensky and Biden further discuss their cooperative defense tactics and how they plan to create and distribute more weapons and air defense systems for the upcoming year. Meanwhile, negotiations amongst the congress regarding America’s plans for future emergency aid to Ukraine were in place. Congressional negotiations heavily revolved around America’s budget and how much the U.S. can afford to assist Ukraine. After much consideration, the administration suggested $60 billion in aid for Ukraines defense against Russia which, according to the U.S. department of defense, includes, “air defense capabilities, artillery and anti tank weapons and other equipment to help Ukraine in its continued fight to counter Russia’s unprovoked invasion.” Much of the other equipment gifted to Ukraine involved different types of rifles and pistols. As the war between Ukraine and Russia rages on, the United States continues to play a vital role in supporting Ukraine in their defenses.
