Hispanic/ Latino Student Union
HLSU Makes its Debut
April 27, 2023
The Hispanic/Latino Student Union at Sierra Vista High School made their debut in the 2022-2023 school year. The students come from a variety of backgrounds and focus on cultural education. After the club’s first year, members hope that they can recruit more participants for the following years to come.
The HLSU aims to develop unity amongst all students at Vista; they aim to create a safe and inclusive environment for anyone and everyone and to provide individuals who want to learn more about Hispanic/Latino culture an opportunity where they can do so. Marina Morales, director of the HLSU explains, “HLSU first formed at the end of Jennifer Morras’ Sophomore Year and Christian Rebolledo’s freshman year. (Last School Year) We formed HLSU because we knew Vista has a big Latino/Hispanic population, but we didn’t have a club for it just yet. With the knowledge of how big our Latino/Hispanic population is at Vista and wanted to give the Latino community a club and space where they could be more in touch with their culture and where we could make more bonds not just with each other but with our teachers and administrators on campus!”
The HLSU constantly participates in on-campus activities and they strive to spread the word to grow their club. The HLSU participates in the school’s Fright Fest and Spring Fest. Morales says, “It is our club’s first year, and we are working to get to know our admin and we’re also volunteering at multiple events to get the word out about us and that we are now a club on campus!”
As an inclusive club, everyone is encouraged to join. The goal of teaching and bonding with many groups on campus unites students as one, they believe everyone’s culture and bond can go deeper than the top layer of the surface that everyone sees. Students interested in joining should expect to work on helping people learn about the HLSU and what they stand for. The HLSU also loves volunteering at different events while making connections. Morales states, “In HLSU, we take our education seriously and our future, so we bring in as many opportunities as we’re able to so they can help you with the path you may want to take!”
