Out of the many classes at Sierra Vista, SV Beats serves as the perfect elective for students interested in the process of making music and the behind-the-scenes process. SV Beats provides a comfortable learning environment for students who want to express themselves and their ideas through the art of music. SV Beats offers instruction in music business, music production, DJ, and songwriting elective and club.

SV Beats class was the brainchild of Mr. Gibson (also our Student Council Advisor), who six years ago started the SV Beats club and eventually turned into an elective later on. Mr. Gibson wanted to share his passion and personal experience in music with his students, in order to do that, Gibson decided to start the SV Beats program to provide students with a space where they can be creative and therefore, create and perform their own music. Mr. Gibson states, “We started off as a club with students that were passionate about making and performing original music. I was able to create the program’s curriculum from personal experience, combining multiple careers that I have had. I have a degree in business, and years of management experience, some in the nightclub and live music scene. I have also been DJ’ing and producing music for 10+ years.” Aside from making music in class, the members of SV Beats also work with the student council regarding any school events that involve music. SV Beats worked with the student council on pep rallies, the spring fest, senior night, dances, banquets and even outside of school events, including First Friday.

Mr. Gibson helps the students focus on the four C’s: collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking. In class, the students record, perform, work on music projects, and create elaborate business plans. SV Beats teaches students to express their ideas more openly, communicate with others effectively, and learn to problem solve in real world situations.

A passionate student in SV Beats, Haley Major, 11th, shares, “I enjoy connecting with others who are passionate about music like I am. There’s so much I truly enjoy about this class, such as songwriting, understanding music and its production, being able to be hands on while creating a song, the creativity shared while working on a project, etc.” The students end up leaving SV Beats with knowledge regarding the music theory, songwriting, melody, and song production.

SV Beats serves as a perfect class for students interested in making music, learning about music production and working on their own music while at school. This class provides a safe and welcoming environment for those who want to turn their creative ideas into a reality. SV Beats takes place in room 501 for students interested in this program.
