The Inside Scoop on Publications
December 14, 2022
In schools across America, purchasing and looking at the yearbook remains a cherished tradition. The yearbook captures memories throughout the school year and showcases every aspect of student life. As for Sierra Vista’s publications team, hard working students earned recognition for their creative efforts with each passing year.
In Room 232, every fifth period, the publications staff works to create a book of memories for the student body. David Jurvelin, the publications teacher, states the yearbook works on a little bit of everything. “It’s a completely student-made publication. They have to get the interviews, take the pictures, design the layouts.” Christopher Lucero, David Jurvelin’s co-advisor, expressed his love for publications as well, “What I love about publications is it documents the story of the school and it allows us to create the story that we want for the school. It really shows a true representation of what we are at Sierra Vista…To try and honor those values of one community, one family, one Vista, the yearbook can really take control of that message.”
Sierra Vista’s yearbook helps connect people and build a community among others. “I enjoy taking pictures and asking people for quotes,” Nicole Uganap, a junior, shares, “you can learn a lot from other sports and clubs, and it really helps with your social skills.” Chloe Gomez-Mata, a sophomore, explains the challenges of publications, “For me, the most challenging task is coming up with a concise story for the event, because I tend to want to put every detail in there. Just like any yearbook, it showcases memories across the entire school year. Although this year’s yearbook focuses on the individuality of each student which I like…When we aren’t taking photos, we’re on the Yearbook website forming a layout that would best show the photos along with typing up a story.”
Despite this being Mr. Lucero’s first year at Sierra Vista, he jumped right into helping manage the Publications I class which lays a foundation for Publications II. Lucero shares “I’ve had a great time with publications and learning from Mr. Jurvelin, who’s the advisor right now. He’s a great teacher to me and I look forward to taking over the class this year. It’s Mr. Jurvelin’s last year so I’m pretty sure he’s going out with a bang.”
Students anticipate what this yearbook has to offer. This upcoming yearbook will feature a heated ink cover which is a feature that changes the color based on the temperature. Categories such as clubs, sports teams, and major events from the year will be included in the yearbook. The theme of the yearbook this year is “See Me” to showcase Sierra Vista High School student’s accomplishments and skills.
It’s important for students to remember that they can buy their own yearbook. Around the school advertising the yearbook, QR codes are posted where students can scan that redirects them to a website they can purchase a yearbook on. Along with this, students can also order a yearbook off of Joshtens.com. It is important to remember to buy a yearbook early since the prices rise as time passes.
