One of the new faculty members at Sierra Vista High School is not so new, Jeffery Poirier, our health science teacher. Poirier just started his first year as a teacher at Sierra Vista, but held the role of the athletic trainer for eight years. Poirier helps the student body tremendously and influences students in a positive way every day.

During sixth period, Mr. Poirier was teaching his class about medical terms.

Poirier explains what his previous job entailed, “I was the athletic trainer, so I took care of all the student athletes; their injuries, their rehab, just watching their games making sure they don’t get hurt,” Poirer adds, “I also worked in the health office for five years as the FASA (First Aid Safety Assistant), so I gave out bandaids.”

Mr. Poirier grew up in San Bernardino and lived there until he was twenty-four years old; he then spent ten years in Orange County by the beach. After moving to Las Vegas in 2010, Mr. Poirier earned his college diploma at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Given his older age, receiving his degree was one of his proudest achievements.

At home, Poirier enjoys barbequing and playing golf; he also enjoys spending time with his son and going to his baseball games. Poirier explained that his son’s birth was one of the most significant parts of his life and a memory that he will never forget.

Not many people are not aware that in Poirier’s earlier years, he entered a barbeque contest, “I entered a barbeque competition once and took fifth place in chicken out of two-hundred fifty people,” Poirier shared.

Because his students mean so much to him, Mr. Poirier never fails to make his class exciting. He loves to joke and create a friendly bond with everyone. Talking with one of his students Devin Gregg, a sophomore here at Sierra Vista, he shares how he feels about having Mr. Poirier as a teacher. “He’s a really good teacher. He keeps it real with everybody which I think is the reason everybody likes him. He just gets along with everyone pretty much,” Gregg explains.

Mr. Poirier has always been helpful and assertive. Here, he is helping Adonis Vaughn, a sophomore at Sierra Vista.

Mr. Poirier shares how he feels as a part of the Sierra Vista staff, “We have a fun group of people here, many of these people have been here for years. It’s just a fun group to be part of”.

Poirer continues with a piece of advice for his students, “Have fun. Join clubs, meet new people. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Four years goes by real quick.”
