Sierra Vista High School offers many different clubs and after school activities for their students. With the wide range selection of clubs, it could be difficult for students to decide which to join. For those interested in being future leaders and entrepreneurs, the Distributive Education Clubs of America club offers realistic ways for students apply social and leadership skills in real life situations. The club consists of marketing and business skills in prepartaion for many intences local, state, and national competitions. DECA dates back almost 74 years and is in over 3,200 schools across America.

The advisor of DECA, Jason Christensen, brings over twenty years of experience to Sierra Vista. Throughout the years, Jason Christensen noticed major improvements in the students’ marketing and social skills, “I enjoy being a part of a wonderful organization like DECA to watch students grow their skills and knowledge from one year to the next. DECA members have a great experience at our State Development Leadership Conference where students can compete and be rewarded for their achievements.” On top of his experience in the club, Jason Christensen teaches the Business Marketing class at Sierra Vista High School.

Not only can DECA act as a great way to socialize and to prepare for the world of business, but also, DECA offers scholarships up to $200,000 for College students across the country. Any DECA members are able to apply for this scholarship and are greatly encouraged to. So DECA is also set to improve students’ marketing skills with role-plays and case studies that provide relevant, meaningful problems for students to solve. A DECA club member, Matthew Chen shares, “I joined DECA because I am taking the marketing course, and plan on doing marketing in the future.” DECA members share that they learned how to communicate thoughts and ideas, and learn about what businesses expect from their employees.

Members are also constantly participating in community service events. Just recently, DECA operated a booth for Sierra Vista High Schools´ Fright Night. Where the members contributed to make posters for their booth. DECA continues as an amazing club for students to acquire experience in business and marking for the future. Any student interested in joining can attend after school at 1:20 pm on Mondays in room #327.
