Over summer break, students tend to stop participating in activities that maintain and improve their skills learned during the school year, known as a summer brain drain. Research shows that reading makes for a great way to prevent losing academic skills. Having a good book to read during summer could change some student’s perspectives about “learning” over summer break.

Having an interesting read creates a fantastic feeling. Skilled authors like Jason Reynolds, a #1 New York Times bestselling author, can put readers in a teenager’s mindset to see what they experience throughout their adolescent times. His book series Track consists of four books, each representing a kid with a troubled background. Each character earned a spot on an elite middle school track team and in order to succeed they need to deal with their personal problems.

Different from Reynolds’ book series, Lois Lowry’s dystopian quartet that began with the classic The Giver should be on everyone’s must read list. The Giver won a John Newbery Medal in 1994. The book truly takes a different look on how society works and could turn into a good read.

A popular book worth reading It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover published in 2016 and became a top selling book of 2022. Aslo written by Hoover, Verity, a top seller in 2022 and published in 2021. Both books are classified as romances; however, Verity also stands on the horror and thriller side.

A new exciting mystery thriller book called Run, Rose, Run keeps the readers on the edge of their seat as James Patterson and Dolly Parton’s work together to create this #1 New York Times best-selling fiction print. The book follows a young singer and songwriter that would do whatever she needs to stay alive.

For those readers interested in romance, Philip William Stover wrote a story called The Beautiful Things Shoppe that discloses a new way of finding love.

Speaking of love Ain’t Never Not Been Black by Javon Johnson who teaches the love of black beauty. For any crime documentary watchers Killing Jericho by Will Harker would make a great book to read as it deals with a former detective takes it into his own hand to solve this murder mystery.
