Deadline Approaches for Summer Enrichment and Credit Retrieval Programs
May 6, 2022
This summer, Sierra Vista High School is hosting summer enrichment and credit retrieval classes for students. Assistant Principal, Sara Smith, outlined the course catalog in an email sent out to SVHS students and parents on April 6.
While summer enrichment classes and credit retrieval classes may seem similar on the surface, only those on track to graduate may take summer enrichment classes. Administration strongly advises students that failed one or more classes in the 2021-2022 to take credit retrieval classes over the summer to make up the credit or credits.
SVHS offers a wide variety of enrichment classes for students this summer, including career classes such as career research, resume writing, and college writing. However, the course catalog additionally incorporates leisurely activities, skill classes, and prep courses. Students can attend classes at SVHS from May 31 to June 17. Students interested in taking an enrichment class must enroll through the google registration form. Attendance is not required for students who register but students must register if they would like to attend. Registration for enrichment classes closes on May 6.
Smith states that students must be on track to graduate or recover classes before taking an enrichment class. “Students have to be on track for graduation to participate in enrichment classes. For students who only need to make up one or two classes, it is possible for them to take the credit retrieval class and then switch over to an enrichment class.”
Although each enrichment class is beneficial, Smith says that some enrichment classes may include more benefits than others, depending on the student. “The enrichment classes are designed to get students involved in activities or subjects that interest them and help them connect with other students who have similar interests… They are all beneficial if they interest the student.”
Students can take credit retrieval classes from May 31 to June 17. Those that failed a class or multiple classes should take credit recovery classes over the summer to get on track for graduation. Although summer credit recovery classes will be in-person at SVHS, students will complete the courses through APEX with teacher support. Enrolled students must come to Sierra Vista High School to take the classes. Registration for credit recovery classes closes on May 6.
Even though students cannot gain credit from enrichment activities, Assistant Principal, Ms. Smith claims that enrichment programs remain worthwhile when it comes to gaining knowledge and experience, “Enrichment courses give students a chance to try new things, spend time with students who have similar interests or expand their knowledge about different activities.”
The summer enrichment and credit retrieval programs remain beneficial to students regardless of their graduation status. Administration and teachers agree that students should enroll in enrichment classes and retrieval programs to get on track to graduate and learn something new over summer break.
