Flag Football

Sierra Vista’s JV flag football team ran this season; breaking the school’s previously held record. The win-loss record ended in 10-4 for our league – the best record in Vista’s history for both regular boys’ football and girls’ flag football. The girls sealed the record with a home game against Palo Verde. Kumiko Allums, 11th grade, shares her thoughts about breaking the school record. “Knowing that I contributed to breaking the school’s record for most games won in a season for flag football and tackle football is crazy. All season long our coach had faith in us and told us how good we were but I didn’t believe it. It makes me feel important and honestly, I’m hoping to break that record next year.” Allums shares her favorite part about the season, “traveling to schools across town that I knew nothing about. It’s so interesting seeing the different landscapes.” “You also get to see the culture of different schools depending on how
many people show up and support their girls’ flag football team.” She also adds that she feels content about the season being over; adding that she played hard, gave it her
best, and is excited to try new activities.
In Varsity news, the overall record was 8-12, taking 6th place in their league. Varsity assistant coach shares the reason he coaches flag football. “It’s more than a game to me, It’s a lifestyle.” He also adds, “I enjoy teaching and getting everyone excited about the sport we love.” There are four seniors who feel bittersweet about leaving the high school field. Cameran Burgard,
Angelina Cruz, Madison O’Neal, and Angela Precious Sabugo. Cameran Burgard tells us that her last season is a special one. “This was one of my favorite years of flag football and I owe it to my teammates. They made my senior season one to remember.” Burgard shares that she started playing flag football for the school her freshman year and never stopped.
She also gives her reason for loving the sport so much. “I grew up in a football family and enjoyed playing with my brother when we were little.” Burgard adds “I love making new friendships with my teammates.” Burgard concludes, saying, “I’m attending UNR, but don’t plan on playing flag football in college.”
