Some high school students think that they will find the love of their life while in their teens, such as their high school sweetheart, while others meet their partner later in life. Research shows that less than two percent of high school relationships make it to the wedding altar; however, not every high schooler looks at their relationship as lasting forever; instead, they look at high school dating as a chance to experience someone new or to simply enjoy dating in the moment.
A significant part of the typical “high school experience” involves relationships whether friendships or “more than friendships” (i.e. dating) which plays a crucial role in maturing and growing up for some. Teenage relationships do not have to be serious but instead, a way for someone to figure out what they like or dislike in their significant other. Alexis Price, junior at Sierra Vista High School says “I do not think high school relationships are a bad thing or even a waste of time as long as both parties are mature. I knew that my last relationship was not going to last, it was more about making memories and having different experiences.”
Michele Meleen M.S. Ed a staff writer based in Westfield, NY who specializes in lifestyle, counseling, and family topics and has an M.A.Ed. in School Counseling offers some tips of dating in high school in “Tips on High School Dating” she advises, “If you have dated in high school, you already know there is a lot that goes into it besides just hanging out with someone you like. Before you start dating, take some time to think about your ideas and preferences about how relationships work:
∙ Understand what dating means to you.
∙ Think about the qualities you want in a boyfriend or girlfriend.
∙ Decide on your personal relationship boundaries.
∙ Consider whether you are ready for a relationship.

Dating in high school looks different for everyone, and it does not always have to be met with drama. If two people demonstrate maturity and understand their own personal values, then a high school relationship can be a memorable experience that both people involved will carry with them.
